After getting married in Croatia (which is totally amazing in and of itself), Yasemin and McLain jetted down to French Polynesia for the ultimate Bora Bora honeymoon. Overwater bungalow? Check. ATV tour around the island? Check. Swimming with sharks and rays? Check check. Read all about their absolutely incredible Bora Bora honeymoon below:
When and where did you honeymoon?
We stayed at the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora, French Polynesia, in July 2013.
How long was your trip?
One night in Tahiti and eight nights in Bora Bora.
How did you decide on your honeymoon destination(s)?
We wanted to go somewhere warm and tropical, where we could just lie on the beach, relax, and do water sports. We were deciding between the Maldives and Bora Bora for our honeymoon destination, and we ended up picking Bora Bora because the weather was better at that time of year.
The best part about our honeymoon was…
So many things! Swimming with sharks and manta rays while they were feeding, scuba diving, and doing a jetski and ATV island tour were among our favorite activities. Also, our overwater bungalow was so peaceful, the view was amazing, and the staff members at the Four Seasons Fesort in Bora Bora were very kind, hospitable, and genuine. Everyone on staff knew us by name and greeted us whenever they saw us.
If I knew then what I know now, I’d change…
The date of our return flight, so that we could have stayed longer ;-)
How much planning did you do in advance?
Basically none, except for the dinner reservation at La Villa Mahana. We left for our honeymoon directly from Croatia, where we had gotten married. We had spent so much time and effort planning our wedding that we hadn’t had much time to think in advance about the honeymoon. Luckily, Bora Bora is the kind of place that caters to honeymooners and tourists, so you can easily plan a multitude of fun activities on short notice.
What was your biggest honeymoon splurge?
We had a celebratory dinner at La Villa Mahana. It is pretty expensive but well worth it for a special occasion. There is a great amount of (very good) food that comes with the amazing tasting menus, so make sure to come hungry. Also, for a particularly romantic evening , reserve the top level table (a beautiful, secluded table outside – and above the other tables) by emailing chef/owner Damien Rinaldi-Dovio at damien@villamahana.com. This table is high in demand, so you need to request it well in advance (we reserved it six months in advance).
Where do you want to go on your next big trip?
We would love to visit Japan to experience the culture and the food. We really want to go visit Sukiyabashi Jiro, especially after watching the amazing documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Australia is also high on our list of places to visit.
